For Mental Health Month I thought I would talk about why self-care is so important to hopefully encourage you to start your own self-care routine!
What is self-care?
Self-care is any activity that allows you to take care of your mental, physical, and/or spiritual health.
It sounds so simple, but it’s often overlooked. Self-care is putting in the work to refill your personal gas tank.
1. Self-care gives you the energy you need to help others.
I remember a few years ago I was on a plane and the flight attendant mentioned that you should always put on your oxygen mask before you help anyone else put on theirs. This is because you can’t help anyone if you aren’t taken care of first.
I realized then that self-care is the exact same way! If you’re struggling mentally or even physically, it’ll be very hard for you to take care of anyone else.
When you take care of yourself you’ll be much better equipped to help the people you care about without feeling drained.
Above all, remember that self-care is not selfish.
2. You’ll be more confident.
Taking time to care for yourself is a perfect reminder that you matter and deserve to be cared for.
Even spending time doing a hobby you love and enjoy can be the perfect way to boost your confidence by showing you just how capable you are!
When you practice self-care you’ll find that you have much more energy to put your best self forward wherever you may be.
3. You’ll feel better and be able to handle more stress.
While small amounts of stress is actually good for you, stress that negatively impacts your life isn’t healthy.
Self-care allows you to take time to decompress and better manage any stress life throws your way.
What are some ideas for self-care?

- Spend time with a friend
- Get outside
- Cook a healthy meal
- Read a book
While taking care of your mind, body, and heart is one of the most important things for living a happy and productive life. But when we’re not feeling our best, self-care is typically one of the first things to go.
If you’ve been needing some motivation to restart your self-care practice, these reasons are a good place to start.
