Today is National Hug Your Hound Day, and what better way to have a happy pup than to make sure she’s as healthy as can be? We all know dogs need daily exercise, regular vet checkups, and a balanced diet to stay healthy. But if you’re anything like me, you’re probably still looking for as many ways as you can to make your dog’s life even better. Here are a few ideas for things you might not have thought of to keep your dog healthy and happy.

1. Feed your dog fresh, whole foods.
Imagine eating the same thing for every meal, every day! Adding fresh, whole foods like berries or vegetables can help combat this problem. Fresh foods are not only full of fiber and nutrients, but add another layer of dimension to your dog’s diet. Another plus of feeding your dog fresh food is that they are completely unprocessed which means none of their nutrients have been lost in the cooking or manufacturing process. They’re delicious and good for your pup, too. If you’re looking for more fresh foods to keep your dog healthy, check out this post!
Remember, not all fruits and veggies are safe for your pup, so it is extremely important to do your research before you feed your pup anything.
2. Take care of your dog’s teeth.
While it is sometimes overlooked, taking care of your dog’s teeth is incredibly important for your dog’s overall health and wellbeing. It is absolutely essential to brush your dog’s teeth once a week and take her to the vet for regular cleanings.
One of our favorite ways to get a dog’s teeth squeaky clean is to give her dental treats. Dental treats are great because they remove plaque, contain ingredients that freshen your dog’s breath, and taste delicious to your pup! Because they’re treats, they’re generally preferred over a tooth brushing. There are tons of different kinds and flavors of dental treats to choose from, but Bailey is absolutely obsessed with these mint and coconut oil treats from Merrick; they’re literally her favorite treat out of anything I’ve given her. She also loves Whimzees dental chews – and I love that they’re totally vegan!
Another option is to give your dog dental chews, which can be anything from an antler to a nylon chew. Our top picks are antlers and Benebones because they last forever.
3. Teach your dog a new trick.
Teaching your dog a new trick is a great way to build better communication and confidence – two things that are essential to keep your dog healthy and happy! Trick training builds flexibility, concentration, and balance, and gives your dog an outlet for his energy and need to be mentally-stimulated. When you’re training your pup, have lots of treats ready, be patient, and take everything at his pace.
Pampering my pup is one of my absolute favorite things to do, so I’m always on the lookout for new ways to make her tail wag. I hope this post gave you some new ideas to help keep your dog healthy and happy, and I’d love to know what you’re going to try next!
