Today we’re interviewing Tori Mistick!
Tori Mistick is the stylish dog mom behind the award-winning blog Wear Wag Repeat. She loves to document dog friendly adventures with her Chocolate Labrador, Lucy, on Instagram under the account @tmistick. See more at www.wearwagrepeat.com.
Okay, introduce us to your adorable dog!
My dog Lucy is an English Chocolate Lab, so she has a chunky build and a block head. She’s a very silly, lovable lab! Some of her favorite things to do are swimming and begging for popcorn next to me on the couch. Since I work from home we get to spend a lot of time together, which is awesome.
What does your typical day as an entrepreneur and dog mom look like?
I always take Lucy for a walk first thing in the morning, usually about 2 miles. While I walk I listen to my favorite podcasts (like the Wear Wag Repeat Podcast). I’m usually working on blog posts, creating content, and running my online store so every day is different. It might involve a photoshoot with Lucy at a cool location around Pittsburgh. Lucy loves photoshoots because they involve a lot of treats!
My pup loves it when we take photos for the same reason! How do you come up with your monthly content? Do you have any tools or an editorial calendar you use?
I love to look at monthly themes and holidays to see if there’s anything that fits my blog. I also create a few sponsored posts per month and I like to find a way to organically build them into my content throughout the month. I like to use Trello to plan out blog and podcast content. I use Planoly to plan my Instagram content.
How did you turn your passion for dogs into a full-time business?
It’s been a long process! I’ve had my blog for about 5 years and I’ve been a social media consultant for about 10 years. That means I haven’t worked in a traditional office in over a decade. I love the lifestyle of working from home so when I noticed my blog catching on I found a way to cut down on other work and dedicate more time to my dog related projects. Luckily, most people in the pet industry are very compassionate, generous, and kind so it’s been easy to build connections.
What do you wish you knew before you started blogging?
I wish I had hired a web designer earlier. I think having a professional look to my site took me to the next level – it also won me an award for Best Pet Blog Design in 2017!
It looks like you do a decent amount of traveling. How do you bring your dog with you?
I love to take Lucy on road trips with me. We’ve gone as far as Myrtle Beach and spent almost two weeks in Asheville last Fall. It takes a lot of planning to find dog friendly accommodations and activities. I find most of my ideas from other bloggers – it’s so much easier to plan a trip when you take advice from people who have been there before!
What’s your best advice for building a community of engaged followers through Instagram?
It’s as simple as the golden rule! You need to put out into the universe the same kind of vibes you want to get back. So if you want more engagement on Instagram, stop scrolling and start commenting. Leave really good, meaningful comments and you’ll build a relationship that will last.
How do you take your pictures? Does someone take them for you?
It’s a mix. I take a lot of photos of Lucy myself on my iPhone X or Sony A7. But if I need photos of us together I think it’s totally worth it to hire a local photographer.
What is your favorite thing about being a dog mom?
Lucy makes me smile so many times every day! Her optimism is a constant inspiration to me!
