How (And Why) I’m Getting Back Into Yoga

I love doing yoga in the moment, but I struggle to stay consistent. I’m trying to reboot my practice again, and this time I’m hoping it’ll stick. If you have the same problem as me, I hope this post can give you a few ideas. Whether you’re getting back into yoga after taking a break or trying it for the first time, it’s an investment in yourself that is definitely worth the effort.

So, how am I getting back into yoga?

I’m setting realistic goals to go to yoga class.

Going to a class is a great way to meet people with the same interests as you and learn more about yoga in the process. Set a reasonable timeframe for you to go to a class, and stick to it.

I’m practicing little, and often, at home.

The best way to stay consistent with a yoga practice is to be realistic and practice for short amounts of time, several times a week. This is much better than risking getting burnt out or too sore by doing one long yoga session every once in a while.

I’m not making comparisons.

Who are you comparing yourself to? Some people wish they could do a perfect crow’s pose like the other people in their yoga class (this has literally happened to me – I went to a beginner’s yoga class a few years ago and everyone went into hand stands about 30 minutes in). For me, I compare myself to myself. I expect that I can come back to my yoga practice after a few months and simply start again where I had left off. Obviously, it doesn’t work like that. Here’s a reminder: do yoga for the benefits it brings to your life, not because you want to be better than that person on the mat next to you.

Speaking of benefits, why do I want to get back into yoga?

There are honestly endless benefits to practicing yoga consistently, but here are some of my favorites:

  • Helps with digestion
  • Makes you more flexible and fit
  • Promotes mindfulness by encouraging you to breathe and stay in the moment
  • Improves sleep
